[description] => You are bidding on a
"banjo ukulele" or "banjo uke", as popularised by George
Formby in the 1930s and 1940s, which combines elements of the banjo and the
ukulele. Banjo ukuleles gained popularity in the early 20th century and were
used in jazz and vaudeville performances due to their portability and
distinctive, bright sound.
The instrument was
produced by Jetel, a brand known for producing banjoleles in the early to
mid-20th century and has the "JTL" marking, meaning it was made by Jerome Thibouville-Lamy, a prominent French manufacturer of string
instruments including banjoleles at that time. I'm not sure when JTL manufactured their last
banjolele, but the JTL brand lives on today as a maker of string instruments.
So as to the
instrument's age, the case screams 1940s to me, possibly earlier, and is in a
wretched state, as most cases are from that time. I'm relatively confident the
case is original - not just because of the dimensions and perfect fit - but
because you would never put your new or replacement banjolele in a case that
has a disintegrated handle and a lid that's only connected to the other half of
the case by the felt lining on the underside.
But if the case is
in a terrible state, the banjolele itself almost looks as if it's never been out of
the case (although has clearly seen some action judging by the markings on the skin).
The banjolele is marked "6" as in model/type.

I bought it at auction about 5
years ago so don't have any provenance or evidence of a back story unfortunately. What I can
say is that there were multiple people bidding on it, much to my amazement and
annoyance, which was presumably due to the maker and the condition (as it certainly
wasn't the case…)
