However, in the 2004–05 season, under Joe Kinnear and later Gary Megson, they were relegated from the Football League Championship, finishing 23rd. They reached the fifth round of the FA Cup and the fourth round of the League Cup, with Gareth Taylor as the top scorer with 11 goals.
