Item Description

Here is a nice three volume set of 1st edition books titled "The Civil War" by Shelby Foote for your buying consideration.  Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep them for yourself.

Good condition 3 Volume Set of 1st Edition Books entitled, "The Civil War" by Shelby Foote.  The publisher is Random House of New York.  The books are not signed by the author.

The first volume, Fort Sumter to Perryville, was put out in 1958, a first edition, third printing.  Dust cover has $25 on top of front flap.  Notes third printing on the page behind the title page.  Some moderate wear to the dust jacket.

The second volume, Fredericksburg to Meridian, was put out in 1961, a first edition.  Price of $12.50 and "11/63" on front jacket flap as required of a first state.   Some moderate wear to the dust jacket, covered in clear plastic.

The third volume, Red River to Appomatox, was put out in 1974, also a first edition book.  Cannot tell what printing, as no dust cover on this volume.  An impressed stamp for a previous owner on the front map page and first blank page of the book.

This fine set of books is being offered to you at a price below what you would see in a fine book shop or auction house.  We can do that by being a dealer in artwork for over 40 years, better controlling our acquisition costs, keeping commission costs low (if applicable).  Finally, we don't have the overhead that fine book shops or auction houses have.

These books were written by Shelby Foote, whom was one of the analysts/commentators in Ken Burns acclaimed PBS Series, The Civil War.  There are illustrations and maps in each book.  Slight dusty smell to the books, no mold or mildew issues.  No foxing or brown spotting to the pages.   No writing or owner marks/stamps in the books, other than what noted above.

The books have grayish cloth hardcovers.  The pages are well bound together in the volumes and each book still has the finish firmly on the spine.  The dust covers are in place on all 3 books.  They each have some minor wear and soiling and tears as shown in the pics.  A slight musty/dusty smell to the books.

Each book is 9-7/8" tall, by 7" across, by approximately 2" wide.  Volume 1 is 840 pages in length.  Volume 2 is 988 pages in length.  Volume 3 is 1,106 pages in length.  Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.  Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.

The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well.  With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.

• Once full payment is received, your item will be shipped on the same or next business day (depending on the time of day the purchase is made).  For example, an item paid for on Tuesday will be shipped no later than end of day Wednesday.  An item paid for on Friday will be shipped no later than end of day Monday. 
• U.S. Federal holidays will impact shipping dates.

Shipping Policy

• Shipping is available to:
• 48 contiguous U.S. states and Canada.
• Select countries (disclosed in individual item description).
• PayPal confirmed addresses only.
• No APO/FPO delivery.
• Items will be shipped via USPS or UPS Ground, based on the buyer's preference.
• Shipped on the same or next business day following receipt of full payment.
• UPS/USPS tracking number will be provided.
• Shipping includes the cost of insurance, where applicable.
• Special shipping requests can be communicated and agreed upon at the time of sale.
• A separate handling charge may apply to certain items that require additional packaging in order to ensure safe shipping.  Please refer to the individual listings to see if a handling charge applies.

If an item is shipped to a country outside of the United States, the buyer is responsible for any brokerage, tariffs, taxes, customs, or other charges imposed by that country.  The seller reserves the right to choose the international  shipping carrier based on shipping method selected at the time of payment.  The seller will not understate the value of any item on customs forms.

 

If you purchase or win more than one auction in which the items can safely be shipped together, we will send you a combined invoice.

We take great pride in is our wrapping to ensure that your order is safely shipped to you.  You might find our shipping costs higher than other sellers, but it is due to the extra time, packing care, and materials we utilize.  Of over 900 packages shipped last year, we had only two items with issues, a 99.8% damage free delivery rate.   Keep in mind, we are not shipping soft goods, like shirts or pants.   We are shipping vintage/antique items that are fragile and require special care.

We also obtain insurance on any item that was bought for $50 or more, and require signature on delivery for items that are valued at over $200.  Plus we have to pay the 11.75% of the final value and shipping fees that eBay and PayPal charges. 

Forfeiture - Items not picked up or arrangements not made by Buyer to have the item shipped to them within 60 days after payment, or during the layaway payment process, will be forfeited by Buyer to Seller.  Seller then has the right to resell the item again, with no refund of purchase price or sales tax to previous Buyer. 

s Policy

• Returns are accepted by seller within 30 days of receipt of item where an item is not as described.  The Buyer will be assessed a 10% restocking fee should they decide to return this item for whatever the reason. 
  
• Please note that a restocking fee is charged to to cover costs related to the loss of listing time and other potential sales, plus the amount of care and time that goes into preparing our unique and fragile items for shipping. 
  
• In accordance with eBay's Buyer Protection Program, the purchase price plus original shipping cost will be refunded to the buyer once the item has been received by the seller, minus the 10% restocking fee noted.
• Buyer would pay for the return shipping cost and any applicable insurance cost (item is the buyer's financial responsibility until the item is safely returned to the seller by shipper).
