Rika Uenoyama, a high school student with excellent guitar skills, was asked by Mafuyu Sato, a high school student, to teach her how to play the guitar after she replaced the strings on Mafuyu's guitar. At first Kaminoyama was reluctant, but after hearing Mafuyu's prodigious singing voice, he changed his mind and invited Mafuyu to join the instrumental band he had formed with Haruki Nakayama and Akihiko Kaji.
The band starts to work toward their first live performance, but Kaminoyama becomes jealous of Mafuyu, who lost her boyfriend in junior high school to suicide and is still haunted by him, and realizes his fondness for Mafuyu. On the other hand, Mafuyu, who has been entrusted with writing the lyrics for the song, is reluctant to write the lyrics because she believes that her own words were the cause of her boyfriend's suicide. At the live performance, Mafuyu is honest about her feelings and sings the lyrics impromptu, and the concert is a success. After the live performance, Kaminoyama and Mafuyu realize their feelings for each other, and the two begin dating.
After the concert, Kaminoyama and Mafuyu change the name of their band to Given, and focus on their music with the goal of participating in a large rock festival. In parallel with their musical activities, Kaminoyama and Mafuyu grow closer, while Haruki and Akihiko's relationship also undergoes a major change involving Akihiko's ex-boyfriend, Ametsuki Murata.
