"The Death of Nelson, The Great National Song, as sung by Mr. Sims Reeves, Composed by Braham."
From the series The Musical Bouquet. Number. Published in London by C. Sheard at the Musical Bouquet Office, 192, High Holborn.

A rare Musical Bouquet sheet, an 1860s publication of the song by which J Braham is still remembered. In his day, Braham was the most successful singer, a celebrity in his own right. He sang before many of the famous at that time, including Napoleon and Nelson (not at the same time!), and Lady Hamilton was said to have had to leave the theatre in a fit of hysterics on hearing his performance of this song, 'The Death of Nelson'. It first appeared in an Opera called 'The Americans' in 1811. I believe Braham sang at Nelson's funeral.

Braham dies in 1857, which is why this 1862 version acknowledges the singer as Sims Reeves, an equally successful tenor in the middle years of the 19th century.

An attractive sheet, with an engraving of the English Fleet on the cover.
