High-quality versions of both "Into The Abyss" by Germany's POISON & "December Moon", by Sweden's legendary MORBID. (Band featuring Dead of MAYHEM)
POISON:
German death/thrash metal band from Ulm. Active from 1982 to 1987. POISON participated on the "Teutonic Invasion Part One" sampler LP by Roadrunner Records in 1987. A stipulation of being featured included signing a contract with Roadrunner forbidding the band to sign a contract with any other company within a twelve-month period. While Roadrunner had the option to sign the band within this time frame, it never happened. After six months or so of waiting and rehearsing, POISON split-up and "Into The Abyss" was their only official release.
MORBID:
Founded in the end of 1986 by Per Ohlin (aka "Dead" of MAYHEM) and "Slator" (identity unknown). MORBID was one of the pioneering metal bands in the Swedish extreme metal scene. The band's career was nevertheless very short as the group started to split apart already after the recording of their debut demo "December Moon" in 1987 when guitarist John Hagstrom left the band. This was the beginning of the end for the group as also Ohlin left soon after and moved to Norway to join MAYHEM.
Usually, listening to a demo requires lowering your expectations. The contents of demos tend to be made up mostly of material expected to be on a forthcoming album, usually as a way to show off the ideas a band has before they tighten up the structures and polish their performances and the production. As such, they tend to be a bit lacking, especially compared to subsequent fuller-bodied versions of the songs. However, no such precautions are needed when listening to "December Moon". Slight production issues and rough execution aside, "December Moon" is just as well-composed as any full-length from the early days of Sweden's death metal scene. Worth your attention if you have not yet checked this legendary recording out.
MORBID is perhaps and should be considered the greatest could-have-been in metal history. This release is only a demo and already the band’s talent was plainly visible, shining extremely bright for a band that was around for such a short time. Also, one must consider this was recorded in 1987 and was one of only few at that time innovating what is now known as the black metal / death metal scene. Employing a sound that sat squarely on the fence between thrash and the Swedish approach to death metal, which at that point was only beginning to emerge. As well as foreshadowing Norway's black metal scene in the vocal department, "December Moon" is a gem, capturing a glimpse of one genre defining band and their formidable skill before their untimely demise. Mourn not this band's quick dissolution, sad though it may be. Celebrate the fact that we're blessed with this brief but monumental opus.
