Description

The Mercedes-Benz W194 300SL race car made its debut in 1952 and scored victories in France's 24 Hours of Le Mans, Germany's Eifelrennen at the Nurburging, Mexico's La Carrera Panamericana, along with 2nd place in Italy's Mille Miglia. The W194 race car was developed into the now iconic W198 300SL sports car, nicknamed 'Gullwing'. Produced from 1954 to 1957, this Mercedes-Benz coupe is renown for its pioneering roof-hinged gull-wing doors. The coupe's tubular space-frame design resulted in high sills on both driver and passenger sides which made the use of conventional doors impossible. The use of gull-wing doors was a clever engineering solution rather than a styling or cosmetic exercise. Powered by a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine mounted at a 45-degree angle, the Gullwing was the world's first passenger car equipped with direct fuel injection. Injecting fuel directly into the combustion chambers increased the engine's output to 215 horsepower, making the Gullwing much more powerful than it's carbureted W194 ancestor. The Mercedes-Benz W198 300SL Gullwing was one of the most advanced and fastest production cars of its time, boasting a top speed over 160 miles per hour.
