What is a Cooling Fan:

The radiator cooling fan (or fans) pulls cooling air through the car’s radiator. Located between the radiator and engine, cooling fans are particularly helpful when the car is stationary or moving at speeds too slow to force air through the grille.

Types of Cooling Fan:

• Mechanical Radiator Fans:Mechanical cooling fans are belt driven, which means that they are attached to a pulley that is connected to the crankshaft via a drive belt. When the crank shaft rotates, the fan pulley also rotates, and the fan either pushes or pulls air through the radiator. 

• Electric Cooling Fans:Electric cooling fans are powered by the electrical system. These radiator fans use DC motors that can be switched on and off either by the engine control unit or directly by a coolant temperature switch. They also typically bolt directly to either the front or back of a radiator along with an integrated fan shroud.

How to Replace the Cooling Fan:

Step 1: Locate the Radiator Cooling Fan

Step 2: Disconnect the Power Supply

Step 3: Remove the Fan Housing

Step 4: Remove the Radiator Cooling Fan and the Fan Motor

Step 5: Attach the Replacement Radiator Cooling Fan and Fan Motor

How to Check a Cooling Fan:

1. Start the car and let it get up to the temperature where the fan normally kicks on.
2. Use the volt meter to test if there is power to the wires. Normal voltage for a radiator fan is around 12 volts. If the volt meter reads 12 volts, the problem is not the power and the fan needs to be replaced.If the volt meter reads that there is no power, check your fuses.
3. For a manual radiator fan, conduct a visual inspection first. Make sure that the four bolts holding the radiator fan are tight. Make sure the belt is in good condition and has tension.
4. If your radiator fan has a fan clutch, check the radiator fan while the motor is running. The radiator fan should be running at more RPMs than the motor. If it is not, the fan clutch is bad and needs to be replaced. If your radiator fan is solid mounted and the fan is not working, your belt is bad and needs to be replaced.

Warm Tips:

It is recommended to replace your Radiator Fan Clutch and Water Pump at the same time.  The fan clutch and water pump are connected by the same shaft. Therefore, When one part fails it typically affects the operation of the other. To prevent premature failure of your new unit, it is wise to replace both at the same time.
