Regarded by many as one of the greatest crime novels, The Hound of the Baskervilles brings Sherlock Holmes to the brink of failure before the inevitable triumph at the end. His deductive, rational approach, one that determines his every move, is pitched against supernatural forces, in the search for the mysterious cause of Sir Charles Baskerville's death. Was it the family curse, a huge phantom hound, or something more logical and explainable? Sherlock Holmes has entertained readers and viewers alike for over 120 years, remaining one of the most celebrated movie characters, played more recently by Robert Downey Jnr (Iron Man) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr Strange). AUTHOR: Scottish writer and master storyteller Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859. As a medical student he was so impressed by his professor's powers of deduction that he was inspired to create the illustrious and much-loved figure Sherlock Holmes. However in contrast to his scientific background, Conan Doyle became increasingly interested in spiritualism, leaving him keen to explore other fantastical elements in stories such as The Lost World.
