About the Author

Mr Ian Francis McLaren (1912–2000) was a former member of the Parliament of Victoria, an enthusiastic bibliographer; publishing around 50 bibliographies.

Mr McLaren assembled a large library which reflected his interests, including voyages and exploration, crime and punishment, political affairs, Australian Aborigines, transport, poetry, Papua New Guinea, parliamentary papers, and Henry Lawson.

The McLaren Collection at the National Library of Australia initially numbering some 34,000 books, serials, newspapers, pamphlets, parliamentary papers, and ephemera, has grown to about 50,000 volumes through generous donations from Mr McLaren and purchases by the Library. It is an exceptionally rich and comprehensive collection, with a particular emphasis on Australian exploration, history, anthropology, and literature.
