Laura Ashley:
LauraAshley is a Welsh textile design company now controlledby the MUI Group of Malaysia. It was founded by Bernard Ashley, an engineer, and hiswife Laura Ashley in 1953 then grew over the next 20 years to become aninternational retail chain. Its products can be described as quintessentiallyEnglish.
After World War II, Bernard Ashley met Welch secretary Laura Mountney ata youth club in Wallington, London. While working as a secretary and raising her first two children, part-time shedesigned napkins, table mats, tea-towels which Bernard printed on a machine hehad designed in an attic flat in Pimlico, London. The couple had invested£10 in wood for the screen frame, dyes and a few yards of linen. Laura'sinspiration to start producing printed fabric came from a Women’s Institute display of traditional handicrafts atthe Victoria & Albert Museum. When Laura looked for small patches carrying Victorian designs to help her makepatchworks, she found no such thing existed. Here was an opportunity, and shestarted to print Victorian style headscarves in 1953.
Audrey Hepburn inadvertently sparked the growth of one of the world's mostsuccessful fashion and home furnishing companies. Hepburn appeared alongsideGregory Peck in the 1953 filmRoman Holiday, wearing a headscarf. As such a fashion icon, she instantlycreated a style that became popular around the globe. The Ashleys' scarvesquickly became successful with stores, retailing both via mail order and high street chainssuch as John Lewis.
By 1975,turnover was £5million per year and the company employed 1,000 peopleworldwide. Laura turned down the offer of an OBE(she was upset Bernard had not been offered one) but a Queen’s Award for Export wasaccepted in 1977.
