Cynical former teacher Dora (Fernanda Montenegro) works as a letter writer for the illiterate at Brazil's Central Station, often not even bothering to post the missives she has grudgingly transcribed. When one of her female clients is run over, Dora takes in her orphaned son, Josue (Vinicius de Oliveira). Josue wants to find his father, Jisus, and Dora reluctantly agrees to accompany him on his search. The two unlikely travelling companions strike up a friendship, and Dora begins to let go of the bitterness which has for so long alienated her from the world.
