Being an element of folk dress, a handkerchief was used instead of a headscarf as a mandatory headdress of a married woman. It was also worn by unmarried girls in winter, under the scorching sun, and in some regions it was tied as a headband.

The headscarf was worn throughout Ukraine. In the summer — linen or purchased calico (punched, netted, embroidered), in winter — home-spun or manufactured woolen.

A scarf was a marker of a woman's social status. Young women wore white or bright headscarves, older women wore dark ones, widows wore black. Unmarried girls often tied themselves in a wreath.

Handkerchiefs indicated the level of wealth of the family. Wealthy women usually bought expensive silk and wool scarves. The fact that under Polish rule in Western Ukraine a man had to work for ten days to buy a handkerchief for his wife testifies to the value of handkerchiefs.

In one form or another, a handkerchief was present in the traditional clothing of most peoples of the world.

Today, scarves continue to be a part of the outfit or an accessory to it for both women and, in some forms, men.

The fashion for scarves is reviving. They are becoming more and more interested. They are studied and returned to the everyday wardrobe.
