the drawings of Jean Genet, Verlane, Rene Bolliger
His works were particularly appreciated by Marcel Jouhandeau and Francis Carco.
He is known for his illustrations of
homoerotic books – some of which were published, others of which were kept
secret – from the 1940s to the 1970s. Bolliger
illustrated Le Livre Blanc for Anacréon, and Francis Carco told him
that he was surely the only artist capable of illustrating, in 1952, the
emotive value of his novel Jésus-la-Caille. (1) He illustrated many different works: ‒ 15 studies for Narcissus by Paul Valéry, 1951; ‒ Jésus-la-Caille (portfolio), under the name Erbé, 1952; ‒ 22 drawings to illustrate Les Beaux Gars, 1960; (2) ‒ 20 monochrome wash drawings to illustrate the private edition of Le Chant du Dormeur by Jean Genet, around 1960; (3) ‒
Hombres by Paul Verlaine, each of which was a unique copy in which
Bollinger wrote out in his own hand Verlaine’s poems, 1965 to 1969
