Published in 1934 by Charles Scribner’s Sons. TRUE first edition, first printing as designated by the famous Scribner Seal AND letter A on the copyright page of each volume. In original red buckram binding with gilt lettering. Volume I - 647 pages including index; Volume II - 621 pages plus index. Octavo, 9.25” x 6.25” Dozens of photo, art, drawing illustrations and maps in each volume.

ABOUT THE BIOGRAPHER

Douglas Southall Freeman (May 16, 1886 – June 13, 1953) was an American historian, biographer, newspaper editor, radio commentator, and author. He is best known for his multi-volume biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington, for both of which he was awarded Pulitzer Prizes.

The books are in VERY GOOD+ condition. Square spines with firm hinges and joints. Slight 1/2” cut to cloth at bottom of rear joint of Volume I. The bindings are colorful and unfaded (quite scarce). Boards are generally quite clean except for a few spots of soiling on Volume I. Some edge wear rubbing to extremities. One corner bumped and some light fraying to another in Vol. II. Owner inscription in pen on each volume’s FFEP. Rear pastedown of Volume I has two former bookstore stamps. Age-toned edges and pages.
