THOMAS BABINGTON
LORD MACAULAY
Edited and introduced by Harold Hobson
1948
Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay, PC, FRS, FRSE (1800-1859), was a British historian and Whig politician. He held the position of Secretary at War from 1939-1841 and served as the Paymaster General between 1846-1848. His most notable work, The History of England, expressed his belief in the superiority of Western European culture and the inevitability of its sociopolitical progress. Macaulay's prose style in this work remains highly regarded.
Born in Leicestershire in 1800, Macaulay was a child prodigy. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he won several prizes and published an influential essay on Milton in the Edinburgh Review. His wide-ranging interests included self-taught languages such as German, Dutch, and Spanish. Macaulay's legacy as a historian and writer endures, making him a significant figure in British intellectual history.
