WWI 1900's US Made French Contract (Model 1914) Remington Arms Co. No. 5, 8mm Lebel Rolling Block Rifle Sword Bayonet & Metal Scabbard

Manufacturer: Remington Arms Company
Model: No. 5
Condition: Very Good - Very Good Plus
Blade Length:  16" (French)

Offered here is an early 1900's Remington No. 5 rolling block rifle bayonet and scabbard. Most of these bayonets were made for export with a quillion. The short export bayonet is most often thought of with Mexico's Rolling Block 7mm rifles bayonet which had a 13 3/16" blade. This one was made for France during WWI. Approximately 100,000 No. 5 rifles were made during 1915-1916 chambered in the 8mm Lebel cartridge. There are no French serial numbers or acceptance marks on this, but this 16" variant is most commonly associated with the French rifles. These were originally based on the Swiss M1889 Schmidt-Rubin bayonets. The scabbard body is made of steel and has an integral leather belt hanger.

Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have a layer of light oxidation and scrapes. The rivets securely fasten the two (2x) wood grip panels. They also have light oxidation. The grip panels have light nicks and compressions and the wood has darkened with age.

The spine has nicks and dings along the edges. The fullers and sides have light scrapes and one impact mark along the left side at the front fuller closest to the blade edge. The blade appears to have its original factory edge and has not been sharpened. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point.

The left fuller is marked, "REMINGTON ARMS - UNION METALLIC CTG. CO., REM. WORKS. ILION, N.Y. U.S.A". The right side guard is marked with a serial number "37".

This scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age (The leather is what is bringing the grading down). The leather frog belt hoop is integral to the metal scabbard. It is functional and securely attached to the body, but the leather is dried out, starting to crack and most of the finish has worn off. The stitching has come undone, but it is still securely attached to metal body. We recommend not using this to preserve its integrity.

The metal mouth, body and finial have scattered light scrapes and a light oxidation, mostly located on the exterior facing the body. There are no dents or dings and most of the finish has worn off.

There are no visible markings.

This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your French Remington No. 5 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards. Please see our photographs for a better understanding of the contents and its condition.
