- Special Edition title on cover and spine is The First Century of the United States, on title page and other listings it is A Centennial Edition of the History of the United States.
- This special edition for the 1876 Centennial of the United States was written specifically to appeal to families. Contents have been rearranged and expanded from the first publication to include a full account and engraved images of the National Centennial Celebration.
- Benson J. Lossing (1813-1891) is a renowned American historian celebrated for his reliance on primary sources and including contrasting accounts in his writings, which include history textbooks, biographies of founding fathers and military leaders, and a series of very popular illustrated historical works, including a Pictorial Field Book of the Revolution, a Pictorial Field Book of the War of 1812, and a Pictorial Field Book of the Civil War. Many of his works are still in publication and must-reads for American Historians.
- Illustrated with over 400 steel and wood engravings of significant people, events, and places in American History.
- Color image of de Soto of the Mississippi on cardstock faces front piece portrait of george Washington.
- Appendix includes important American documents, such as the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, etc.
- Inscribed on front end paper in ornate script “from Grandma to Jackson Duff March 26th, 1881”

- Very Good, Near Mint Condition for an antiquarian book (1876)
- Hardcover, no dust jacket (as published); full reddish-brown publisher's cloth binding; front and back covers are bright and clean with some light shelf and handling wear including some rubbing on the edges and scuffing on the corners
- Front cover is embossed with a ornate borders, the words “The First Century of the United States”, and an image of Independence Hall in gold and black - colors are bright and crisp; back cover is embossed with a plain border and no additional colors
- Spine is decorated with ornate details in black and gold at the head and and tail; embossed with an image of a goddess-like woman and publishers in gold near the tail; embossed with “The First Century of the United States” and the author’s last name; cover material shows bending and scuffing from shelf wear at the edges of the head and tail
- Joints and hinges are intact and tight, no tears; plain endpapers are intact except for a small split in the front; front endpaper is inscribed
- 748 pages are tight, bright, and clean; threads show between some sections; some mild age-related toning, no foxing observed; edges are plain and show age-related toning; Octavo
- 400+ Illustrations are steel and wood engravings; full-page to small in-text images; many larger illustration are protected by tissue paper; a color image of de Soto of the Mississippi is printed on cardstock on page facing front piece.
