220 years old! A lesson for those interested in Critical Race Theory. This antique book is in good condition but full of some bad stereotypes and interesting lessons in how the world was viewed and what was taught to school kids in the United states then. Very patriotic, if you are an early American or European colonist. Very dated ethnocentric (racist) descriptions of Indians, Persians, Arabians, Asians, Africans, and Spanish peoples (read examples in pictures), descriptions of environment, geography, government, really shows how school kids were taught to view other cultures in a negative light and the planet to be exploited. This "short but comprehensive system of the geography of the world" is a schoolbook written in question and answer format. Vintage antique. Hard to put down. Spoiler alert--the final question "what parts of the earth remain undiscovered?" is answered proudly, that, of the remaining lands still unknown to white colonizers, "If any commercial advantages were expected from a discovery of those places, it is probable that the enterprising spirit of Europeans or Americans would find means to penetrate them." So much for conservation! Phew! What a piece of history! The "science" of Geography in this book is great for someone studying culture, conservation, prejudice, geography, environment, or sociology, and of course, for someone who is interested in rare books. Binding is still intact but loose on one side (see picture). Book still holds together, maybe it wasn't read too much by the schoolchild, Allanson Pratt, who was the owner according to the inscription inside the book (see picture). Priced a dollar for each year old it is. Since this book is so upsetting, I am donating 10% of sale to Direct Relief.
