DESCRIPTION

Froissart's Chronicles tells the history of the Hundred Years' War in prosaic form, and was written in the fourteenth century by Jean Froissart. It is an extensive work, complete in almost one and half million words. It describes occurrences in Europe from the deposition of Edward II in 1326 until 1400.

Translated in 1806 by Thomas Johnes (1748-1816), an MP, writer, translator and social benefactor. He translated numerous other works from French, including Jean-Baptiste de La Curne de Sainte-Palaye's 'Memoirs of the Life of Froissart' and Jean de Joinville's memoirs.

Complete in two volumes.

Containing a life of the author, as well as an essay on his works and a criticism.

Bound in contemporary leather, with decorative tooling to the spine, marbled edges and endpapers.

Illustrated with wood-cuts throughout the text, as well as an illuminated title page. With two colour plates loosely inserted not related to this work.

A fascinating, illustrated history of Europe in the fourteenth century.
