1852 - LAYS OF ANCIENT ROME – By Thomas Babington Macaulay Antiquarian HB Book

1852 - LAYS OF ANCIENT ROME – With Ivry And The Armada By Thomas Babington Macaulay Antiquarian Hardback Book. This is a new edition. It was originally published in 1842 and so is a very early edition, being only 10 years later in 1852. It is a collection of narrative poems by Thomas Babington Macaulay

There is no Dust Jacket.

Published by Longmans, Brown, Green and Longmans, Paternoster-Row in London and printed by Spottiswoodes and Shaw, New-Street-Square, London.

It includes a beautifully illustrated title page

This book is really clean, bright, neat and tightly bound. Fantastic for its age, considering that it is over 170 years old

The brown cloth bound boards and spine are intact, robust and in a good condition for a book of this age, with stunning embossed borders on the front board and back board and gilt lettering on the spine. There is some wear, some marks and stains, bumping to the corners and small splits in the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference.

Inside, there are yellow pastedowns and endpapers. The pages are not uniform in their edging and roughly cut, but this is most likely to do with the construction method when this book was made and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a penknife. The pages are lightly tanned and in a really neat and clean state, with only the very occasional small mark or light crease. There is a small rip to the bottom of page 151 (and overleaf), but there are no further rips to the pages. On the front free endpaper there is a pen inscription. However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. The book is tightly bound and there are no loose or missing pages, which is great for a book of this age. All 167 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This really is a really lovely example of this book.

This measures approximately 18.6 cm by 12.8 cm and 1.8 cm wide. It weighs approximately 287 grams.

Thank you so much for looking.
