UNCLE TOM’S CABIN By Harriet Beecher Stowe c1900 ILLUSTRATED Antiquarian Book

UNCLE TOM’S CABIN By Harriet Beecher Stowe Circa 1900 ILLUSTRATED Antiquarian Book. With illustrations by George H. Thomas and an introduction and a bibliography

The “List of Illustrations” page makes mention of a frontispiece and an illustration of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in the title page. Neither of which appear to be present. However, there are over 100 illustrations throughout the book, which are present and accounted for. In about 1850 Thomas produced a set of woodcuts for Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, and I believe these to be the ones used in this book. There are also beautiful all-edge gilt pages and coloured pastedowns and endpapers

Published by The Daily Telegraph, Fleet Street, London and is part of "The Daily Telegraph Library”, which was the 100 best novels selected by the Editor, with the assistance of Sir Edwin Arnold, H. D. Traill, and W. L. Courtney. Printed by Richard Clay And Sons, Limited, London and Bungay.

This book is not dated, however, there are a few clues to help approximate its date of publication. Firstly, there is a prize award plate pasted to the front pastedown which is dated 1904. Secondly there is reference to Sir Edwin Arnold (as afore mentioned). He was an English Poet and Journalist. He died in March 1904 at the age of 71. There is also mention of H. D. Traill, who was Henry Duff Traill, again a British Journalist and an Author. He died in February 1900, and so this book probably pre-dates this. W. L. Courtney is also mentioned, however, he lived until 1928. This concludes me to believe that this book dates to 1900 or earlier.

This comprises of 529 pages of the main text, and 61 pages containing the introduction, bibliographical account, and the preface, which are all present and accounted for.

There is no dust jacket.

The blue cloth bound boards and spine are intact, however, there are numerous marks and stains over the cover, wear, bumping to the corners, small rips to the cloth at the corners and the top and bottom of the spine and some fading. The front board is decorated with ornate embossed borders and there are embossed decorations on the spine. There is also gilt lettering ion both the front board and the spine. Please see the photographs provided for further reference.

Inside, the pages are tanned, which is consistent for books of this age. The pages have several light or small marks on them, but they are otherwise neat, and the majority of the pages are uncreased. There are a few pages which have very small rips to their edges, and page 15 (and overleaf) has a small rip in the page face, however, none of these obscure the text or illustrations. Other than the afore mentioned prize award plate, there is no pen or pencil written inside this book. Between the pastedowns and free endpapers (at each end of the book) there are cracks in the gutter, but the main text block is tightly bound. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.

This book measures approximately 19 cm by 13 cm and 3.5 cm wide. It weighs approximately 589 grams.

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" is an anti-slavery novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was first published in 1852 and is considered one of the most influential works of American literature. In fact, during the Victorian era it is thought that there was only one book with more sales than this, and that was the bible. The novel played a significant role in shaping public opinion about slavery in the United States in the years leading up to the American Civil War.
