A Witch Is Born.
Originally an LP record issued in 1969, (at the height of Sanders' notoriety), this CD re-issue is a recording of the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Degree Witchcraft Initiations as proscribed by Alexandrianism: the Sanders amalgam of Wicca, Ceremonial Magic and other esoteric elements. There is also included a narrative on The Descent Of The Goddess. This is a mythological account of the Goddess of Witchcraft, Diana, descending into the Underworld, conquering Death and then learning all of the secrets of Magic from him: she then returns to the land of the living to impart these secrets and arts to certain human beings. The narrator is the late Stewart Farrar, a "White Witchcraft" disciple of Sanders whose original liner notes now fall short of the mark in many instances, chiefly his authoritarian, dogmatic insistence that "Only a Witch can make a Witch" - an instruction now completely ignored by Witchcraft adherents and proponents.
The concept/format of this recording is all too obviously influenced by an earlier LP - "The Satanic Mass" - made by Anton LaVey and The Church Of Satan in 1968. This featured LaVey reading extracts from his "Satanic Bible" to the music of Wagner in the background, as well as a live recording of a full-blown Black Mass. In "A Witch Is Born", Wagner again can be heard as a musical accompaniment to the Sanders proceedings. Whereas the technique is a masterstroke in the LaVey LP, the inclusion of identical music in the Sanders production is out-of-place, irritating, off-putting and spoils the impact. If you can secure a copy of this rare curio, I would highly recommend it to any collector of Occultic paraphernalia generally.
