Thomas Hood (1799–1845) was an English poet, humourist, and essayist. He is known for his witty and satirical writing, often addressing social and political issues of his time. Hood's works were influential in the Victorian era and continue to be appreciated for their clever wordplay and imaginative style.

The "SERIOUS POEMS" collection contains some of Hood's most thoughtful and philosophical works, in contrast to the more humourous and satirical poems he was also known for. The poems in this collection explore themes of mortality, the human condition, and the nature of existence.

This does not have a Dust Jacket.

This is a lovely book in the publisher’s original binding. It is quarter-bound with red cloth on the spine and inner-edges and marbled paper over the boards. There is gilt lettering over a black background on the spine. The cover is intact, robust, and in a good condition for a book which is nearly 140 years old. There is some wear, which is expected from a book of this age. This includes small rips and rubbing to the paper at the corners and edges, discolouration to the cloth on the spine, small marks, and light scratches. Please see the photographs provided for further reference.

Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, with darker tanning on the endpapers. This is consistent for a book of this age. There is light foxing on some of the preliminary pages, the last handful of pages, and the page edges. Besides this, the pages are in an overall neat condition, and predominantly uncreased. There is just the occasional very small mark or very light foxing on the rest of the pages, and only small folds on a few pages. Most of the pages are without rips and there is just a small rip on the inner edge of the front free endpaper (see photo) and the top of page 383 is very slightly roughly cut. On the front free endpaper there is also a small pen inscription. However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. Most of the pages are tightly bound and there is just very light and partial cracks in the gutter between pages 382 and 383. All the pages are secure and there are no loose pages. There are no missing pages and so all 383 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.

This measures approximately 13.6 cm by 9.8 cm and 2 cm wide. It weighs approximately 164 grams.
