James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American Romantic poet, critic, editor, and diplomat.

As a poet, Lowell is best known for his satirical and abolitionist poems such as this book, "The Biglow Papers" (1848) which criticised the Mexican-American War and the institution of slavery. Other notable poems include "The Vision of Sir Launfal" (1848) and "An Indian-Summer Reverie" (1844).

Lowell was a leading intellectual of the 19th century and an influential voice on social and political issues of his time, particularly regarding slavery and the role of literature in society.

This does not have a Dust Jacket.

This is a lovely book in the publisher’s original binding. It is quarter-bound with red cloth on the spine and inner-edges and marbled paper over the boards. There is gilt lettering over a black background on the spine. The cover is intact, robust, and in a good condition for a book which is nearly 140 years old. There is some wear, which is expected from a book of this age. This includes small rips and rubbing to the paper at the corners and edges, soft bumping to the corners, discolouration to the cloth on the spine, small marks, and light scratches. Please see the photographs provided for further reference.

Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, with darker tanning on the endpapers. This is consistent for a book of this age. There is light foxing on some of the preliminary pages and the last couple of pages. Besides this, the pages are in an overall neat and clean condition, and uncreased. There are just the occasional small marks or very light foxing on the rest of the pages. Most of the pages are without rips and there is just a very small rip on the inner edge of the back pastedown (see photo). This is minimal. On the front free endpaper there is also a small pen inscription, which has transferred a little onto the front pastedown. However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. The pages are tightly bound, and the pages are secure. There are no loose pages. There are no missing pages and so all 384 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.

This measures approximately 13.6 cm by 9.8 cm and 2 cm wide. It weighs approximately 166 grams.
