The author is the Right Reverend Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667), Bishop of Down and Connor. He was a cleric of the Church of England and achieved fame as author during the Protecorate of Oliver Cromwell. Jeremy Taylor was known for his poetic style of expression, sometimes referred to as "Shakespeare of Divines".
The condition:
Binding:
- Very worn leather binding, NOTE: the front board is missing.
- The rear outer hinge is intact but the inner hinge is split.
- The textblock itself is still tightly bound.
- The spine once was delicately decorated and embossed but it has very faded and part of the bound pages can be seen
Pages:
- All pages are present
- No loose pages
- NOTE- many pages have underlining of text and tiny scribbles along the edges but the actual text can still be read perfectly well.
- The print is crisp
- There is foxing throughout
- Some pages have small tears and / or creases along the edges.
- 207 pages
Some of the hadwritten notes which seem to point to further interesting individuals, with it being a rare book:
- On the blank front pages is a note which I tried to deciper and got this far: "found by H the 7th of April 1703 at 7 .....(?).... in King Street in Westminster"
- Above the title on the titlepage: "William Elliot Pastor Epsom (month?) 1861" - Could he have been involved with the Epsom United Reformed Church? There was a Reverend William Elliot who ministered (with others) the Parade Chapel in Epsom
- A further note on a blank page, in yet again different handwriting: "Ex dono Johanny Philpot (signature), 1702"
Further tiny handwriting on the back end paper but I cannot decipher it.
It measures approx 15cm x 9cm x 2cm
I am reducing my book collection and this is one of the books I hope will find a home where it will be appreciated.
