Dick Bruna was a world-famous figure in children’s literature. In his long life (1927-2017) he created 124 picture books. His illustrious career also included work as a publishing designer, with over 2,000 book jackets and posters to his credit.
He is best known for his iconic bunny-character, Miffy.
In 1955, he entertained his young son with sketches of a bunny they saw on vacation. He went on to make up bedtime stories, and then later books, about the creature, who was named “Nijntje”in his native Netherlands. The book was an immediate success throughout Europe. In 1963, when it was readied for publication in English, the translator changed the name to “Miffy”, noting that Nijntje was difficult for non-Dutch-speakers to pronounce. In all, Bruna created 32 books about Miffy. The series sold more than 85 million copies worldwide and was translated into more than 50 languages.
