comic book fanzine: ALTER EGO #8; produced by Roy Thomas; Winter 1965; aprox 7x10"; photo offset; saddle stitched; 40 pages; in excellent condition.

ALTER EGO was the backbone publication which helped launch comic fandom.  It was the first fanzine devoted exclusively to comics and which covered a wide variety of topics.  Created by Jerry G. Bails; it was originally supposed to a quarterly publication but actually came out on an irregular schedule under a variety of different editors after Jerry found the work load involved in producing three zines and keeping up with the Academy of Comic Book Arts was too much.  Circulation on the first issue was limited primarily to those addresses Jerry could cull from comic letter columns and related connections.  Later issue had much larger distribution, altho thru much of its run no subscriptions were accepted.

ALTER EGO #8        (Winter 1965)               (40 pages)  7x10” photo offset saddle stitched with full color covers from Roy Thomas             Frocov by Biljo White illustrating the article by Darrill Rothermich and Roy Thomas on the early days of Blackhawk.  In the editorial Roy is in a tizzie because DC threatened to sue his pants off if he ran an unpublished Marvel Family comic book story as promised last time.  Also, Alter Ego is now accepting subscriptions (and you know what happened to your dough if you did…)  Robert M. Hopkins examines Doc Savage in pulps and comics; Ron Foss presents a complete Eclipse comic story; Fred Patten examines DC and other comic heroes south of the border (primarily in Mexico); Glen Johnson looks at the JSA propaganda efforts; a solid letter column. Much of the art in this issue is by Biljo White with help from Ron Foss; also includes a half page “identity” art piece from Steve Ditko.  Fanzine is in excellent condition.
