From the Dust Jacket: "It is unlikely that anyone could have lived in the United States during the last fifty years without having been exposed to the photographs of Alfred Eisenstaedt. As one of the legendary photographers of the twentieth century and a pioneer in the field of photojournalism. "Eisie" has covered an extraordinary variety of assignments around the world.
Eisenstaedt: Remembrances is a grand celebration of a life devoted to photography. It presents a wide-ranging look at Eisie's work, from his first days as a press photographer in Germany in the late twenties and early thirties through his long, prolific, and illustrious career at LIFE---a career that began with the first issue of the magazine in 1936 and continues to this day. Selected by Doris O'Neil from the archives of LIFE and from Eisenstaedt's vast personal file, the images in this book reveal the breadth of his achievement. Included are pictures of historic events such as the first meeting of Hitler and Mussolini, vivid portraits of many of the most famous people of this century---statesmen, scientists, artists, writers, actors, politicians, philosophers---and endearing, timeless vignettes of ordinary people in midcentury America and Europe. As diverse as they are, the photographs are unified by Eisenstaedt's eye and by his intuitive ability to record moments of grace, wit, and beauty in the human experience.
Eisenstaedt received the National Medal of Arts in November, 1989 for "extraordinary photographs that document the tragedies and triumphs he has witnessed over a lifetime."
