"George Washington: The Forge of Experience (1732-1775) is the first volume in James Flexner's magisterial four-volume biography of the nation's first President.  This volume covers his early years, his marriage to Martha Custis, his taking ownership of Mount Vernon, and his role (and frustrations) as a colonial military officer working alongside the British in fights against the French and American Indians.
