This auction is for: 8 silicone coated tell tales with black self adhesive discs that stick firmly to sail material ( the sticky discs are made from the same material as sail numbers)
and blue silicone coated spinnaker cloth streamers.
Made in England by Lulham-Robinson Sails
The silicone coated spinnaker cloth increases the functionality of the tell tales and ensures that they are less likely to stick to the sail in wet conditions.
Tell tales are an essential item for the sail of any sailing dinghy or yacht.
- If you place these 10% back from the luff of the sail these will allow you to sail to windward at the best possible angle.
- Place 3 tell tales on each side of your jib just back from the leading edge, at the:
- bottom
- middle
- and top.
When a sail is trimmed correctly all Tell-Tales on both sides will float horizontally along the surface of the sail.
If the boat is pointing too high or the sail needs pulling in, the Tell-Tales on the windward side will flutter and lift.
If sailing too low or the sail is pulled in too tight, the leeward Tell-Tales will flutter and the windward tell tales will droop.
- When sailing a fixed course on a reach for example, Keep easing the jib until the windward side tell tales begin to flutter and then just pull it back in a tiny bit until the tell tales float horizontally. To keep your dinghy moving at maximum speed this process needs to be repeated constantly.
-
When sailing to windward, with your jib in quite tight, steer the boat according to the Tell-Tales. Keeping them floating horizontally will ensure that you are making the best progress to windward. Keep edging back up to windward to ensure you are always going as close to the wind as possible

-
To check the fore and aft sheeting positions of the jib, sail close hauled and all the tell tales should float or flutter together. Move the sheeting position forward or backward until all tell tales float horizontally at the same time.
- Just keep them streaming as you sail to windward and your boat speed will be at its optimum.
Fasten the 7th and 8th tell tales to the leach of your jib. Approx 1/8 and 1/4 from the top In light conditions they well droop when your jib is in too tight
