A very scarce work.  Complete in two volumes.

James Lemon's account of his public career in Southampton over a period of forty years, from 1866 to 1900. An interesting glimpse into late Victorian England.

Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume.

Written by Sir James Lemon, who was the borough surveyor in Southampton, where he set about improving the sewerage system in the town, and later became the mayor of the town.

Preface by James Lemon states “A few words may be necessary to explain the existence of the present work.  Many times since my retirement from active work friends have suggested that I should write my recollections of Southampton as it was when I became Borough Engineer forty-four years ago, and to add my impressions of the progress of events since that time”.

Vol. I – [vi], 286pp plus the 8pp index.

Vol. II – [iv], 284pp plus the 6pp index.

Approximately 8 ¾ inches tall.

• Spine – good condition – gilt titles, small white mark to the middle of the spine of Vol. II, bruised top and tail.
• Joints – good condition – gently rubbed and worn.
• Corners – good condition – bumped and worn.
• Boards – good condition – green cloth boards with gilt titles and blind stamped borders to the upper boards, some damp staining to the upper board of Vol. I.
• Page edges – good condition – top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges hand cut, tanned and foxed.

Internally

• Hinges – good condition – intact in both volumes, some straining to the gutters internally.
• Paste downs – good condition – plain yellow.
• End papers – good condition – plain yellow, some damp staining in Vol. I on the front end paper, subsequent end papers tanned and foxed.
• Title – good condition – tanned and foxed in both volumes, the title page of Vol. II has a tissue guard.
• Pages – good condition – half title present in both volumes, tissue guarded frontispiece ‘James Lemon’ in Vol. I, standing picture of James Lemon in Vol. II signed ‘Yours faithfully, James Lemon’, tanned and foxed throughout.
• Binding – good condition – original cloth binding.
