This is an authentic USGI bayonet made by Remington for the US government during the first World War for trench shotguns and M1917 .30-06 rifle.
The hilt is in very good condition. The wooden handles are in very good condition. They have a very nice medium brown color. They have very light nicks, dents and scratches. The pommel and cross piece retain most of their original blue that has turned to a plumb patina. I can only find a couple of tiny spots of corrosion. The release/lock button works.
The blade is in good condition retaining a little bit of its parkerized surface. It has several very light spots of corrosion along the length of the blade giving the blade a mottled appearance. The edge of the blade is in very good condition. The ricasso is clearly dated 1917 and has a clear Remington circular logo. The obverse has the eagle head, shell and flame, US and a faint X (bend test acceptance). It also has the # 28 under the eagle. This could be regiment and rack number designation.
The frog is in very good condition but may have been painted.
The scabbard is in very good condition. Both the steel end mount and throat piece are mostly silver in color. The metal throat and end has some small scattered spots of scattered oxidation. The leather body stitching on the side seam is sound. The leather body has the normal scuffs, scratches and nicks. The body has a nice dark brown smooth surface. Both the metal throat and end piece have RE in a circle. I believe this represents Remington as the maker. The edge of the metal throat has a D 2 D with an arrow under????
