Swamp Milkweed
is a perennial wildflower that is native to the central and eastern parts of the United States. They are prized for their brilliant clusters
of fragrant lilac-pink flowers, which bloom continuously for weeks from mid to
late summer. The central stem will branch off occasionally, forming lateral
light green stems; atop these stems bloom pink-shaded umbels of flowers spanning
about 2 to 3 inches across.
Swamp Milkweed can be
found most often in moist prairie soils, along ponds,
rivers, streams, marshes, drainage thickets, floodplain forest and bogs. Swamp
Milkweed prefers full to partial sun, wet or moist conditions and soil
containing damp clay, rich loam, or silt with rotting organic material.
Depending on environmental conditions, Swamp Milkweed can grow between 2 and 5 feet
tall and will spread through underground rhizomes and seed shedding. It will reemerge
in the Spring and is deer resistant.
