Some Book Reviews:
5/5 stars - Concise enjoyable biography of a fascinating man
This biography was an easy read and very enjoyable. It's quite brief (about 230 pages) considering the life and contributions of James E. Talmage. James Talmage was a truly gifted man who made full use of his intellectual and spiritual abilties. He always put God and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as top priority in his life, and he found peace and happiness. When he was counseled to focus his studies and complete them in a timely manner to enable him to return to teaching at the Brigham Young Academy, James complied and forfeited the opportunity for advanced degrees. However, due to his prolific scientific documentation and publication of work done with his optical microscope (a big deal near in the 1880s to 1920s), he earned worldwide recognition in the academic communities and was granted a Ph.D. By this account, James was completely unwavering in his faith in his religion. The biography made very little mention of the tension between religion and science in James' mind. Apparently, he felt there were no major conflicts, or if he did, he did not share them. The biography made no mention of the issues of the origin of man and the antiquity of the earth. James differed with Joseph Fielding Smith, a fellow apostle, in some aspects of these questions, though they both agreed that man was created by God and Adam was the progenitor of our race. As far as I know, they agreed to disagree on some points and got along just fine. James was concerned that Joseph's personal views would be seen by church members as representing the official position of the church, and he requested and received permission from the First Presidency of the church to state and publish his own views. Anyway, the biography did not mention any of these issues - maybe because James never mentioned them in his journal or the author chose not to cover them - we don't know. I would be interested in reading more if his journals do contain more information. In summary, this book is well worth your time and very uplifting, but I wish it were longer and had more content regarding this controversial issues that are still relevant today.

5/5 stars - A fantastic overview
This book was much more interesting than I had anticipated. The author drew heavily from Talmage's original journal entries and was very careful not to speculate or elaborate past the information in the journals. The book moves fairly quickly through the major events of Talmage's life and paints a fascinating portrait of a warm, caring, and extremely accomplished individual.
I was hoping to get a better feel for Talmage's opinion regarding evolution and the fossil record, but the book didn't seem to discuss that topic in the level of detail I had anticipated. This is probably due to the brevity that Talmage gave these topics in his public statements.

5/5 stars - He was a scientist who was excellent in teaching and his students loved to learn from ...
We really are enjoying this book in our home. The life of James E. Talmage is so interesting because he was a man of God and bore testimony of Jesus Christ at every opportunity. He was a scientist who was excellent in teaching and his students loved to learn from his lectures, field studies, and daring expeditions. He was one of the finest minds the world has ever known. He was a great author and his books are still 'best sellers' and loved by multiple generations. This book tells the human side of this man. His love of storytelling makes this book funny and awe inspiring. A reader will love the adventure of his life in the late 1800's hiking to the bottom and back up out of the Grand Canyon before there was any trail! His early train rides and how transportation improved over his lifetime. You will love this biography.
