The Waters Under the Earth by John Moore (First Edition, 1965)

A substantial novel of over 400 pages that is perhaps best described as "elegiac". I read it shortly after visiting Calke Abbey, which it complements to perfection: the end of the old order, an increasingly impoverished minor aristocracy, deference on the decline, the dawning of a more modern age.

Moore was a great lover of the countryside, and that really shines through in the many superb descriptions. The sense of place and history is also very strong. Interesting, well-drawn characters too. Overall a very enjoyable read, in my view, without being a "lightweight" novel.

The dust jacket has a crease down the spine and some minor edge wear, but is not price-clipped (see images). The book itself is in very good condition, with very clean pages. There is a pencil price (in shillings!) and a name in ink on the front endpaper.

Only selling this because I want to free up some space

The book will be sent out protected by a waterproof bag, bubble wrap and a cardboard book mailer.

In these tough times for many people, I intend to donate 5% of the selling prices to a local charity or a local food bank.

Thank you for looking. Happy to answer any questions.
