Common Name: Birdfoot Violet, Mountain Pansy

A selection of the US native Birdfoot Violet, distinct in the Violet world for its bi-color flowers and narrow dissected foliage resembling that of a bird's foot.  It forms a dense clump of foliage that is covered in flowers beginning in spring. The superior petals are a dark purple while the lateral and interior petals are a lilac blue. Expect sporadic rebloom until fall frost.

Large striking flowers and distinctive finely divided foliage, resembling a bird’s foot, make birdfoot violet (Viola pedate)  a delightful plant for the rocky, well-drained garden. This 4-8” tall clumping perennial has showy 1-1½” wide bi color blooms.

Birdfoot violet will tolerate filtered shade but thrives in a sunny dry site with acidic soils. Sharp drainage is key to keeping this plant alive in the garden. It is a larval and nectar source for the regal fritillary butterfly. Birdfoot violet is a great plant for the rock garden.
