I have here for sale a book entitled THE SPORTING MAGAZINE; or, MONTHLY CALENDAR Of the Transactions of the Turf, the Chase, and every other Diversion Interesting to the Man of Pleasure, Enterprize, and Spirit, for December 1794 printed for the Proprietors by J Wheble; London, in 1794.  First edition.

"The Sporting Magazine (1792-1870) was the first English sporting periodical to devote itself to every type of sport.  Its subtitle was "Monthly Calendar of the Transactions of the Turf, the Chase, and every other Diversion Interesting to the Man of Pleasure, Enterprize, and Spirit".  It was established in 1792 and published in London; it was able to offer extensive coverage of events nationally because the editor, John Wheble, had established a wide network of informants, writers and contributors throughout the shires.  Readers of the magazine were also encouraged to contribute material.  The magazine aimed to present an accurate, accessible record embracing everything that was regarded as sport.

In this edition there are articles on the Description of a Decoy for taking Wild Fowl; Female Dress; Farriery; Description of Fox Hunting; Deer Stealing; Muscles of the Horse's Leg; Duke de Aremberg's Establishment of the Chase; Pedigrees of famous Horses; and a section of Poetry.  There is also a full-page two tone plate of the Muscles of the Horses Leg.

Both covers are missing, as is part of the spine.  Browning to the borders of pages.  Title/Contents page partially detached  but all other pages are intact and the book is in very good internal condition.  53 pages.  21 x 13.5 cm.
