I have here for sale a book entitled WILD SPORTS OF THE WORLD A Book of Natural History and Adventure by JAMES GREENWOOD Twenty-Fifth Thousand with Woodcuts from Designs by Harden Melville and William Harvey, Coloured Illustrations from Water-Colour Drawings by J B Zwecker, Harrison Weir and Harden Melville, Portraits of Celebrated Hunters from Original Photographs, and Maps showing the Habitats of Animals and Plants all over the World published by S O Beeton, London, in 1862.  This book on hunting and natural history by journalist and novelist James Greenwood discusses the history, habits, and physiology of a number of species of big game animals including tigers, elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and many more, together with information on methods of hunting, weaponry, and tactical movements.  The book includes 6 fold-out b/w maps of the Continents; 6 full-page colour plates (unfortunately 4 are missing); 8 b/w portraits of hunters as the headings of chapters; and 146 in-text woodcut illustrations.  

Green calf leather boards with a gilt border.  Minor marks on the boards.  Five raised bands with gilt lettering and gilt decoration on the spine.  Marbled endpapers and page edges.  Light foxing to prelims and flyleaf with a few spots on some pages.  All pages are tight and the book is in very good condition.  xii, 426 pages.  22 x 14.5 cm.
