Gyula Halász (1899 – 1984), better known as Brassaï, was a Hungarian photographer who rose to international fame in France in the 20th century. Working as a journalist, Halász wandered Paris late at night, taking photographs to supplement some of his articles to earn more money. Brassai used his camera to capture the beauty of streets and gardens in the rain and fog and to illustrate Paris nightlife. Using the name of his birthplace, Halász went by the pseudonym "Brassaï," which means "from Brasso." Introduction by travel writer Lawrence Durrell.
