Peter Donegan is the son of Lonnie Donegan, one of the earliest international stars of British pop music during the rock era. Lonnie's 1956 single "Rock Island Line" was a US Top 10 hit, and he accumulated over 30 UK hits between 1956 and 1962, many of which are revived here by his son in a scintillating live performance recorded at Gateshead's Elephant On The Tyne night club.
Peter Donegan, who played keyboards in his father's band for several years as a teenager, is far from being merely a tribute act, as is proved by the inclusion here of one of his original songs "Just One Kiss". As well as keyboards, Peter also plays guitar and banjo, and his dynamic lead vocals have been likened to those of his father. His band also includes brother David Donegan on percussion, highly rated North East husband and wife Michael Bailey (bass, backing vocals) and Rachael Rhoades (violin, accordion), Mark Anderson (guitar, backing vocals) and guest drummer Lindisfarne's Ray Laidlaw.
The repertoire selected by Peter Donegan for this debut album does not include Lonnie's music hall songs but concentrates on traditional material and songs associated with Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, The Weavers, etc. Peter Donegan seems destined for stardom in the near future: this is the first album by a young man who could equal (or even exceed) the great fame achieved by his father.
