Brief portion of the inside dust jacket reads:
When Jefferson Davis rode into Richmond to assume the presidency of the new Confederacy, he took a leading role in the only great experiment in rebellion that our country has ever witnessed.  Mr. Dowdey's chronicle begins just before the Confederacy became an actuality but follows the war through the final downfall of the South.
Richmond, the Confederate capital is the background for this very human, lively, and well-informed story of the people engaged in the 'experiment" which, depending on its outcome, would mean life or death to the Union.  Clifford Dowdey has caught perfectly the color of Richmond life and shows us the Confederate center in the flush of temporary success and in the bleakness of defeat.....
