A Wizard of Earthsea

Ursula K. Le Guin
(Hardback Edition 1978)

Interest:  Fiction, Classic Fiction, Magic, Wizards, Dragons, Mythology, Earthsea Series,

This is a tale of wizards, dragons, and shadows, played out in a world like and unlike our own, in an archipelago of imagined islands. The young boy Sparrowhawk realises his uncommon powers while defending his village against an enemy horde. He goes to Roke Island where he enters a School for Wizards. Pride and jealousy drive the boy to try certain dangerous powers too soon, and a terrible evil is let loose in the land.

So begins chase and hunt between the young wizard and shadow-beast across the stone-peaked islands and the furthest unknown waters of Earthsea.

A Wizard of Earthsea is the first part of the Earthsea trilogy. It is an adventure story, a Quest, a tale of a proud incautious boy who meddled too early with the Dark.
