The selections in the earlier part of the book are from writers who have prepared condensed histories, and thus helped us to cover much ground in a single chapter. The later chapters will be found, if less comprehensive, more crowded with the gems and masterpieces of historical literature.

Phillips & Hunt of New York printed this book in 1883.  The book measures 8 1/8 inches by 5 11/16 inches by 1 1/4 inches and it weighs 1 pound 8 ounces.  The pages are numbered 1-350.  There are 5 additional pages with black and white plates facing pages 100, 127, 162, 166 and 216 which are not included in the numbered pages.  There are also 5 additional pages with colored maps which are not included in the numbered pages.  I went through the book one page at a time and found that page 109 has a ¼ inch tear and none of the pages are creased (dog-eared).  The binding is tight and the hinges are not cracked.  A few pages have some light pencil markings such as parenthesis and check-marks.
