"Moby Dick or The Whale" by Herman Melville is told through the narrative of Ishmael a sailor on board a whaling ship whose captain is seeking vengeance against Moby Dick, the giant sperm whale who crippled him on the ship's previous voyage. This book was a commercial failure and out of print at the time of the authors death in 1891. Its reputation as a "Great American Novel" was established in the 20th century after the 1919 centennial of the author's birth.
