Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a nice older Shure Brothers 540 model dynamic microphone from the 1960's. It's a Sonodyne II model that was sold as a "general purpose" microphone that is an all metal design with satin chrome finish and has a more aggressive look to it. It comes with the older original cable in which to operate.

Pic # 2 is from an old Shure Brothers catalog I have showing all of the mics performance characteristics. This was a more affordable dynamic mic compared to the more sophisticated and far better sounding dynamic cardioid models of that era such as the Shure 55S and Electro Voice RE10. If you needed something reliable for general broadcasting, paging, etc...this was your go to mic. These happen to make excellent harp mics as well with a gritty tone being void of bass and excellent overdrive.

The 540 does have an adjustable bass screw in the rear of the head as seen in pic# 9 which does work and gives you a bit of control over the tone. The original screw was missing from the mic as they sometimes work their way out if the user unscrews it too much so I put a replacement screw in there.

The 540 series mic is omni-directional so it tends to pick up more surround sound.

As you can see in the pics provided the satin chrome finish has a decent luster and shows very lite wear after all these years. There are no engravings, scratches, nicks or fractures anywhere on this 540S. There is however a few tiny blemishes here and there. Still a really nice mic and far better than most you'll come across. The black plastic looks pretty nice too. Just some extremely lite wear on the Shure badge. The front grill is free of any dents or tarnish and a new inner foam pop filter was installed to help with sound characteristics.

The joint mechanism holds firm as it should and the head pivots back and forth as needed. The Shure front and rear labels look incredible. Overall this mic is a very conservative 8 + on a scale of 1 - 10.

This mic will screw onto any microphone desk or floor stand you might be using.

The mic comes with an older mic cable that is soft, pliable gives you plenty of length to work with. 9 feet in length. It also has the quality Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment.

You got everything you need and this 540 is ready to go.
