Hardback, around 4.5 inches by six tall, is bound in its publisher's original blind-stamped red cloth, titled and decorated in original gilt.
First edition published by Darton And Co, London, in 1849. Provenance: Sparks, from contemporary inscription inked in a flowing italic hand to recto preliminary preceding title [as photo, further above]; free from further permanent inscription and markings to the text.
Although interior condition is overall acceptable, because this original letterpress book is more than 170 years old, it does display signs of use and age — such as the usual discolouration to old paper; slight wear to (intact) binding; periodic minor marks and small edge tears to a few pages— consistent with a printed object of this vintage. All viii preliminary pages + 376 pp main text are complete and otherwise correct. All pages gilt-edged.
