What is L-Carnitine?

L-carnitine, also known as carnitine, is made in the liver and kidneys. It is a quaternary ammonium compound synthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine and performs some of the same functions, such as helping metabolize food into energy, transportation of fatty acids and consumption and disposal of fat in the body. L-carnitine is synthesized in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine and requires the presence of vitamin C for its creation. L-carnitine transfers long-chain fatty acids, such as triglycerides into mitochondria (a cell's energy powerhouse), where they may be oxidized, releasing energy. L-carnitine is a very popular supplement that promotes fatty acid metabolism as well as growth and development. It is also used for fat-burning, increasing energy, and improving resistance to muscle fatigue. L-carnitine also helps to build muscle. It is also great in dieting, as it reduces feelings of hunger and weakness.

What are the benefits of L-Carnitine?

Fat Loss:

L-Carnitine has many beneficial properties that make it an ideal supplement for aiding in fat loss. As mentioned above, L-Carnitine helps with the transport of fatty acids. More specifically it helps with the transport of LCT’s (long-chain triglycerides) into mitochondria. Once transported to the mitochondria, they are oxidized and used as energy. Burning fat instead of storing it. L-Carnitine also helps to reduce fatigue and reduces appetite, making it amazingly beneficial for fat loss.

Improved Performance:

Studies conducted for The Journal of Physiology demonstrated the benefits of L-Carnitine for increasing performance. Researchers did placebo studies to see the true effects of L-Carnitine on the body. The patients were all experienced athletes who were training for a triathlon three to five days a week. After 24 weeks of supplementation, the group who took L-Carnitine had increased performance by 11%, while the placebo group had no improvements in performance.

Increased Work Capacity:

With higher L-Carnitine levels, you will have a much greater work capacity. L-Carnitine helps to eliminate the by-products of intense training and decrease lactic acid build up.  This will allow you to push yourself even harder in the gym.

Faster Recovery:

Since L-Carnitine decreases the amount of lactic acid build up in the muscles, it greatly reduces recovery time. Less lactic acid means less soreness and greater energy, which leads to much faster muscle recovery.

Improved Male Fertility:

Studies have been done that show a possible link between L-Carnitine and male fertility. The studies found that the males with higher levels of L-Carnitine had much healthier sperm, while those classified as infertile had very low levels of L-Carnitine.

Enhanced Brain Function/Cognition:

L-Carnitine acts as an antioxidant, and helps to detox the brain of heavy metals. Not only does this improve brain function but it can also increase attention span, improve mood and increased overall cognition of the brain.

Improved Kidney Health:

Your kidneys produce L-Carnitine. When people have been diagnosed with a kidney problem or may have one, doctors will often recommend L-Carnitine supplementation to help make up for the deficiency.

Are L-Carnitine Supplements Safe?

L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid. While there are a long list of the potential benefits of taking L-Carnitine supplements, though not all have been substantiated, there is no denying that there are some potential, though minor, side effects as well. There have been no substantial claims of toxicity due to overdose with L-Carnitine, nor any other severely negative problems reported. Generally, the worst side effects reported are nausea and vomiting. In consideration of any number of other supplements available over the counter and in health and fitness stores world-wide, L-Carnitine has little in the way of negative side effects. This means that, in general, L-Carnitine is safe for the vast majority of people. However, if you do suffer side effects from taking an L-Carnitine supplement, it is best to stop taking it immediately and consult your physician.
