Wartburg - a brand of East German cars, manufactured from 1956 to 1991 at the national enterprise Automobilwerk Eisenach in the city of Eisenach.

From 1956 to 1967 the model Wartburg 311 was produced. Initially it was a restyled version of the car IFA F9 with a new body, but during its release was significantly upgraded technically, having received a completely new chassis. There were also modifications - Wartburg 312 (wagon), Wartburg 313 (roadster) and pickup.

From 1966 to 1988, a new Wartburg 353 vehicle was produced. Modifications are the Wartburg 353W Tourist with the station wagon, the Trans pickup, the cuebel. The car had a bold and modern for 1965 body design and quite good for those times technical specifications.

In 1985, the base Wartburg 353 and all its modifications were restyling, which primarily touched the exterior: the modified front bodywork, rear lights. From 1988 to 1991, the Wartburg version 1.3 was produced, which was a combination of a frame and a body of the late model "353" with a four-stroke Volkswagen engine with a volume of 1.3 liters. The car received a new grille, plastic bumpers, block headlights and new tail lights.

Initially having a number of progressive for its time technical solutions, by the beginning of the 1980s Wartburg were already morally and technically obsolete machines [the source did not specify 123 days]. The enterprise developed new perspective models of these machines in the 1970s and 1980s, but for one reason or another they were not put into serial production.

For Wartburg cars, as well as for the automotive industry of the GDR as a whole, there was a smooth evolution with a high degree of constructive and technological continuity between generations, but at the same time until a certain moment they were continuously subjected to "soft" current modernization, periodically pulling up their technical, economic and consumer quality to the modern level. The name Wartburg comes from the fortress of the same name, located next to Eisenach, where these machines were manufactured.
