What are the symptoms of bad wheel bearings?

1) Noise:

• A humming, rumbling or growling noise that increases with acceleration or as the vehicle turns.
• A loud constant whining or grinding noise when the vehicle is in motion.
• Clunking noises when driving over uneven road surfaces.

2) Looseness, excessive play in the steering wheel (vague steering);
3) Steering wheel vibration which changes with the vehicle speed or as the vehicle turns;
4) ABS malfunctioning.  ABS system issues can be related to failure of the ABS sensor that is integrated in the wheel end bearing.

What is the steering knuckle?

The steering knuckle is that part of the suspension, which is responsible for holding the wheels in a stable plane of motion. Depending on the car type, the steering knuckle attaches to the lower swing arm and the MacPherson strut or the upper swing arm. In the front, the steering knuckle attaches to the steering system by means of the tie rod ends. The steering knuckle has a hub which receives the wheel bearing or the wheel hub.

How to remove the steering knuckle?

In order to be able to remove the steering knuckle, you will have to disconnect all the elements that are attached to it.  The procedure is performed in the following sequence:

1) The machine is put on a jack or hung out on a lift;
2) We unscrew the corresponding wheel;
3) Dismantle the brake caliper;
4) Unscrew the shock absorber strut mount;
5) We press out the tip of the tie rod. In order not to have to change it, it would be better to arm yourself with a special tool;
6) Dismantle the axle shaft from the hub;
7) We unscrew the sensors and other equipment, if available in the car. In this case, it would be better to remember where what is attached. All you need to do is take a photo on your phone;
8) Dismantle the fist itself. To do this, use a flat screwdriver to disconnect the fastening of the retaining ring on the ball joint installed on the lower arm;
9) The last step is to remove the hub from the fist (the lock nut is unscrewed), before that the splines are unclenched. Next, the wheel bolts are screwed in, and the hub is knocked out from the back with light blows.

Keep in mind that replacing a steering knuckle will likely affect your car’s alignment settings. We suggest taking your car in for an alignment after doing the job.
